Autism became a spectrum for one reason: money. Funding for autism used to apply to autism (classic). As a spectrum, it confuses everyone, and now, no one knows what autism is when someone says it. It is not just a socially acquired issue at all. It seems to be trendy now to say I have autism when what they have is Asperger, are a savant, social/empathy issues. So when I have to say my son has autism, we are talking like the movie Rainman. But, most people think of all the other spectrum types, which are known as high-functioning autism. My son will never live on his own, drive a car, etc, and will not hold a high-functioning job as most people with Asbergers and savants can. It is frustrating at best and has reduced the care for a low-functioning autism. Try to image Down syndrome as a spectrum, but it doesn’t work, and neither does it work for autism. Autisim is a critical issue in brain development with no cure.
